Patrick Henry High Celebrates Financial Literacy Graduation

On May 22, 2015, Heritage Bank and the Heritage Community Foundation, in conjunction with Patrick Henry High School, celebrated the graduation of students from the first “accredited’ Financial Literacy course, in which the private sector and Heritage Bank played an important role in the course study.

Rocky Davis, the Executive Director of the Heritage Community Foundation, connected Don Dunlap, an economics teacher at Patrick Henry High School with Robin Gay, EVP at Heritage Bank. Together, they collaborated on a condensed, intense, 10-week accredited course in Financial Literacy. The theme was designed to represent the “true life” experience of an individual from their first paycheck and checking account to their final days of retirement. Each week, Mrs. Gay brought in a professional speaker from each area of finance to speak with the students about their respective area of expertise. Mr. Dunlap incorporated the state-approved curriculum around each of the speakers’ topics, creating the course and establishing the class. continue reading →

Heritage Community Foundation Presents Grant to Shining Light Ministries, Inc.

Jonesboro, Ga. (May 13, 2015) – The Heritage Community Foundation presented a grant to Teresa Bestwick, Founder/Executive Director of Shining Light Ministries, Inc. (SLM) in McDonough on April 30, 2015. The $5000 grant was used by SLM to purchase a pre-owned vehicle which the ministry will use to transport residents to and from doctor’s appointments, counseling sessions and various meetings. Previously, the ministry’s only form of transportation was a passenger van, which was not always available nor practical for transporting just a few residents. The car will allow SLM more flexibility in scheduling appointments and will provide substantial cost savings per trip.

SLM is a non-profit, faith-based recovery home for women which provides a long-term residential recovery program for women suffering from drug and alcohol addictions. The comprehensive rehab program uses moral recognition therapy, behavior modification, AA/NA, and life skills training. continue reading →
